Using heavy 5 gauge knit, which retains heat well and also gives a rich texture.  The natural oils in the yarn mean it has self cleaning and water resistant properties.  Inspired by team outfits of sailing teams and pitstop crews.  Often sailors wore hats matching the team colors of their boats.  A part of motor racing is to be visible to the crowds and for safety.  Bold warning colors and striped helmets were essential.
