California Quails are richly patterned, round birds that can be found hurrying across clearings in the brushy areas of California and the Northwest. Their most distinctive feature is their comma shaped head plume, which is actually a cluster of six overlapping feathers. California's state bid, they avoid mountains and stick to the coast and valleys.
